  6. Pre-1.2.5 archives spoofing vulnerability (CVE-2023-36811)
  7. ----------------------------------------------------------
  8. A flaw in the cryptographic authentication scheme in Borg allowed an attacker to
  9. fake archives and potentially indirectly cause backup data loss in the repository.
  10. The attack requires an attacker to be able to
  11. 1. insert files (with no additional headers) into backups
  12. 2. gain write access to the repository
  13. This vulnerability does not disclose plaintext to the attacker, nor does it
  14. affect the authenticity of existing archives.
  15. Creating plausible fake archives may be feasible for empty or small archives,
  16. but is unlikely for large archives.
  17. The fix enforces checking the TAM authentication tag of archives at critical
  18. places. Borg now considers archives without TAM as garbage or an attack.
  19. We are not aware of others having discovered, disclosed or exploited this vulnerability.
  20. Below, if we speak of borg 1.2.6, we mean a borg version >= 1.2.6 **or** a
  21. borg version that has the relevant security patches for this vulnerability applied
  22. (could be also an older version in that case).
  23. Steps you must take to upgrade a repository:
  24. 1. Upgrade all clients using this repository to borg 1.2.6.
  25. Note: it is not required to upgrade a server, except if the server-side borg
  26. is also used as a client (and not just for "borg serve").
  27. Do **not** run ``borg check`` with borg > 1.2.4 before completing the upgrade steps.
  28. 2. Run ``BORG_WORKAROUNDS=ignore_invalid_archive_tam borg info --debug <repo> 2>&1 | grep TAM | grep -i manifest``.
  29. a) If you get "TAM-verified manifest", continue with 3.
  30. b) If you get "Manifest TAM not found and not required", run
  31. ``borg upgrade --tam --force <repository>`` *on every client*.
  32. 3. Run ``BORG_WORKAROUNDS=ignore_invalid_archive_tam borg list --format='{name} {time} tam:{tam}{NL}' <repo>``.
  33. "tam:verified" means that the archive has a valid TAM authentication.
  34. "tam:none" is expected as output for archives created by borg <1.0.9.
  35. "tam:none" is also expected for archives resulting from a borg rename
  36. or borg recreate operation (see #7791).
  37. "tam:none" could also come from archives created by an attacker.
  38. You should verify that "tam:none" archives are authentic and not malicious
  39. (== have good content, have correct timestamp, can be extracted successfully).
  40. In case you find crappy/malicious archives, you must delete them before proceeding.
  41. In low-risk, trusted environments, you may decide on your own risk to skip step 3
  42. and just trust in everything being OK.
  43. 4. If there are no tam:none archives left at this point, you can skip this step.
  44. Run ``BORG_WORKAROUNDS=ignore_invalid_archive_tam borg upgrade --archives-tam <repo>``.
  45. This will unconditionally add a correct archive TAM to all archives not having one.
  46. ``borg check`` would consider TAM-less or invalid-TAM archives as garbage or a potential attack.
  47. To see that all archives now are "tam:verified" run: ``borg list --format='{name} {time} tam:{tam}{NL}' <repo>``
  48. 5. Please note that you should never use BORG_WORKAROUNDS=ignore_invalid_archive_tam
  49. for normal production operations - it is only needed once to get the archives in a
  50. repository into a good state. All archives have a valid TAM now.

  59. Pre-1.1.11 potential index corruption / data loss issue
  60. -------------------------------------------------------
  61. A bug was discovered in our hashtable code, see issue #4829.
  62. The code is used for the client-side chunks cache and the server-side repo index.
  63. Although borg uses the hashtables very heavily, the index corruption did not
  64. happen too frequently, because it needed specific conditions to happen.
  65. Data loss required even more specific conditions, so it should be rare (and
  66. also detectable via borg check).
  67. You might be affected if borg crashed with / complained about:
  68. - AssertionError: Corrupted segment reference count - corrupted index or hints
  69. - ObjectNotFound: Object with key ... not found in repository ...
  70. - Index mismatch for key b'...'. (..., ...) != (-1, -1)
  71. - ValueError: stats_against: key contained in self but not in master_index.
  72. Advised procedure to fix any related issue in your indexes/caches:
  73. - install fixed borg code (on client AND server)
  74. - for all of your clients and repos remove the cache by:
  75. borg delete --cache-only YOURREPO
  76. (later, the cache will be re-built automatically)
  77. - for all your repos, rebuild the repo index by:
  78. borg check --repair YOURREPO
  79. This will also check all archives and detect if there is any data-loss issue.
  80. Affected branches / releases:
  81. - fd06497 introduced the bug into 1.1-maint branch - it affects all borg 1.1.x since 1.1.0b4.
  82. - fd06497 introduced the bug into master branch - it affects all borg 1.2.0 alpha releases.
  83. - c5cd882 introduced the bug into 1.0-maint branch - it affects all borg 1.0.x since 1.0.11rc1.
  84. The bug was fixed by:
  85. - 701159a fixes the bug in 1.1-maint branch - will be released with borg 1.1.11.
  86. - fa63150 fixes the bug in master branch - will be released with borg 1.2.0a8.
  87. - 7bb90b6 fixes the bug in 1.0-maint branch. Branch is EOL, no new release is planned as of now.
  88. .. _broken_validator:
  89. Pre-1.1.4 potential data corruption issue
  90. -----------------------------------------
  91. A data corruption bug was discovered in borg check --repair, see issue #3444.
  92. This is a 1.1.x regression, releases < 1.1 (e.g. 1.0.x) are not affected.
  93. To avoid data loss, you must not run borg check --repair using an unfixed version
  94. of borg 1.1.x. The first official release that has the fix is 1.1.4.
  95. Package maintainers may have applied the fix to updated packages of 1.1.x (x<4)
  96. though, see the package maintainer's package changelog to make sure.
  97. If you never had missing item metadata chunks, the bug has not affected you
  98. even if you did run borg check --repair with an unfixed version.
  99. When borg check --repair tried to repair corrupt archives that miss item metadata
  100. chunks, the resync to valid metadata in still present item metadata chunks
  101. malfunctioned. This was due to a broken validator that considered all (even valid)
  102. item metadata as invalid. As they were considered invalid, borg discarded them.
  103. Practically, that means the affected files, directories or other fs objects were
  104. discarded from the archive.
  105. Due to the malfunction, the process was extremely slow, but if you let it
  106. complete, borg would have created a "repaired" archive that has lost a lot of items.
  107. If you interrupted borg check --repair because it was so strangely slow (killing
  108. borg somehow, e.g. Ctrl-C) the transaction was rolled back and no corruption occurred.
  109. The log message indicating the precondition for the bug triggering looks like:
  110. item metadata chunk missing [chunk: 001056_bdee87d...a3e50d]
  111. If you never had that in your borg check --repair runs, you're not affected.
  112. But if you're unsure or you actually have seen that, better check your archives.
  113. By just using "borg list repo::archive" you can see if all expected filesystem
  114. items are listed.
  115. .. _tam_vuln:
  116. Pre-1.0.9 manifest spoofing vulnerability (CVE-2016-10099)
  117. ----------------------------------------------------------
  118. A flaw in the cryptographic authentication scheme in Borg allowed an attacker
  119. to spoof the manifest. The attack requires an attacker to be able to
  120. 1. insert files (with no additional headers) into backups
  121. 2. gain write access to the repository
  122. This vulnerability does not disclose plaintext to the attacker, nor does it
  123. affect the authenticity of existing archives.
  124. The vulnerability allows an attacker to create a spoofed manifest (the list of archives).
  125. Creating plausible fake archives may be feasible for small archives, but is unlikely
  126. for large archives.
  127. The fix adds a separate authentication tag to the manifest. For compatibility
  128. with prior versions this authentication tag is *not* required by default
  129. for existing repositories. Repositories created with 1.0.9 and later require it.
  130. Steps you should take:
  131. 1. Upgrade all clients to 1.0.9 or later.
  132. 2. Run ``borg upgrade --tam <repository>`` *on every client* for *each* repository.
  133. 3. This will list all archives, including archive IDs, for easy comparison with your logs.
  134. 4. Done.
  135. Prior versions can access and modify repositories with this measure enabled, however,
  136. to 1.0.9 or later their modifications are indiscernible from an attack and will
  137. raise an error until the below procedure is followed. We are aware that this can
  138. be annoying in some circumstances, but don't see a way to fix the vulnerability
  139. otherwise.
  140. In case a version prior to 1.0.9 is used to modify a repository where above procedure
  141. was completed, and now you get an error message from other clients:
  142. 1. ``borg upgrade --tam --force <repository>`` once with *any* client suffices.
  143. This attack is mitigated by:
  144. - Noting/logging ``borg list``, ``borg info``, or ``borg create --stats``, which
  145. contain the archive IDs.
  146. We are not aware of others having discovered, disclosed or exploited this vulnerability.
  147. Vulnerability time line:

  153. .. _attic013_check_corruption:
  154. Pre-1.0.9 potential data loss
  155. -----------------------------
  156. If you have archives in your repository that were made with attic <= 0.13
  157. (and later migrated to borg), running borg check would report errors in these
  158. archives. See issue #1837.
  159. The reason for this is a invalid (and useless) metadata key that was
  160. always added due to a bug in these old attic versions.
  161. If you run borg check --repair, things escalate quickly: all archive items
  162. with invalid metadata will be killed. Due to that attic bug, that means all
  163. items in all archives made with these old attic versions.
  164. Pre-1.0.4 potential repo corruption
  165. -----------------------------------
  166. Some external errors (like network or disk I/O errors) could lead to
  167. corruption of the backup repository due to issue #1138.
  168. A sign that this happened is if "E" status was reported for a file that can
  169. not be explained by problems with the source file. If you still have logs from
  170. "borg create -v --list", you can check for "E" status.
  171. Here is what could cause corruption and what you can do now:
  172. 1) I/O errors (e.g. repo disk errors) while writing data to repo.
  173. This could lead to corrupted segment files.
  174. Fix::
  175. # check for corrupt chunks / segments:
  176. borg check -v --repository-only REPO
  177. # repair the repo:
  178. borg check -v --repository-only --repair REPO
  179. # make sure everything is fixed:
  180. borg check -v --repository-only REPO
  181. 2) Unreliable network / unreliable connection to the repo.
  182. This could lead to archive metadata corruption.
  183. Fix::
  184. # check for corrupt archives:
  185. borg check -v --archives-only REPO
  186. # delete the corrupt archives:
  187. borg delete --force REPO::CORRUPT_ARCHIVE
  188. # make sure everything is fixed:
  189. borg check -v --archives-only REPO
  190. 3) In case you want to do more intensive checking.
  191. The best check that everything is ok is to run a dry-run extraction::
  192. borg extract -v --dry-run REPO::ARCHIVE

  194. Change Log 1.x
  195. ==============
  196. Version 1.3.0a1 (2022-04-15)
  197. ----------------------------
  198. Please note:
  199. This is an alpha release, only for testing - do not use this with production repos.
  200. New features:
  201. - init: new --encryption=(repokey|keyfile)-[blake2-](aes-ocb|chacha20-poly1305)
  202. - New, better, faster crypto (see encryption-aead diagram in the docs), #6463.
  203. - New AEAD cipher suites: AES-OCB and CHACHA20-POLY1305.
  204. - Session keys are derived via HKDF from random session id and master key.
  205. - Nonces/MessageIVs are counters starting from 0 for each session.
  206. - AAD: chunk id, key type, messageIV, sessionID are now authenticated also.
  207. - Solves the potential AES-CTR mode counter management issues of the legacy crypto.
  208. - init: --key-algorithm=argon2 (new default KDF, older pbkdf2 also still available)
  209. borg key change-passphrase / change-location keeps the key algorithm unchanged.
  210. - key change-algorithm: to upgrade existing keys to argon2 or downgrade to pbkdf2.
  211. We recommend you to upgrade unless you have to keep the key compatible with older versions of borg.
  212. - key change-location: usable for repokey <-> keyfile location change
  213. - benchmark cpu: display benchmarks of cpu bound stuff
  214. - export-tar: new --tar-format=PAX (default: GNU)
  215. - import-tar/export-tar: can use PAX format for ctime and atime support
  216. - import-tar/export-tar: --tar-format=BORG: roundtrip ALL item metadata, #5830
  217. - repository: create and use version 2 repos only for now
  218. - repository: implement PUT2: header crc32, overall xxh64, #1704
  219. Other changes:
  220. - require python >= 3.9, #6315
  221. - simplify libs setup, #6482
  222. - unbundle most bundled 3rd party code, use libs, #6316
  223. - use libdeflate.crc32 (Linux and all others) or zlib.crc32 (macOS)
  224. - repository: code cleanups / simplifications
  225. - internal crypto api: speedups / cleanups / refactorings / modernisation
  226. - remove "borg upgrade" support for "attic backup" repos
  227. - remove PassphraseKey code and borg key migrate-to-repokey command
  228. - OpenBSD: build borg with OpenSSL (not: LibreSSL), #6474
  229. - remove support for LibreSSL, #6474
  230. - remove support for OpenSSL < 1.1.1
  231. Version 1.2.0 (2022-02-22 22:02:22 :-)
  232. --------------------------------------
  233. Please note:
  234. This is the first borg 1.2 release, so be careful and read the notes below.
  235. Upgrade notes:
  236. Strictly taken, nothing special is required for upgrading to 1.2, but some
  237. things can be recommended:
  238. - do you already want to upgrade? 1.1.x also will get fixes for a while.
  239. - be careful, first upgrade your less critical / smaller repos.
  240. - first upgrade to a recent 1.1.x release - especially if you run some older
  241. 1.1.* or even 1.0.* borg release.
  242. - using that, run at least one `borg create` (your normal backup), `prune`
  243. and especially a `check` to see everything is in a good state.
  244. - check the output of `borg check` - if there is anything special, consider
  245. a `borg check --repair` followed by another `borg check`.
  246. - if everything is fine so far (borg check reports no issues), you can consider
  247. upgrading to 1.2.0. if not, please first fix any already existing issue.
  248. - if you want to play safer, first **create a backup of your borg repository**.
  249. - upgrade to latest borg 1.2.x release (you could use the fat binary from
  250. github releases page)
  251. - run `borg compact --cleanup-commits` to clean up a ton of 17 bytes long files
  252. in your repo caused by a borg 1.1 bug
  253. - run `borg check` again (now with borg 1.2.x) and check if there is anything
  254. special.
  255. - run `borg info` (with borg 1.2.x) to build the local pre12-meta cache (can
  256. take significant time, but after that it will be fast) - for more details
  257. see below.
  258. - check the compatibility notes (see below) and adapt your scripts, if needed.
  259. - if you run into any issues, please check the github issue tracker before
  260. posting new issues there or elsewhere.
  261. If you follow this procedure, you can help avoiding that we get a lot of
  262. "borg 1.2" issue reports that are not really 1.2 issues, but existed before
  263. and maybe just were not noticed.
  264. Compatibility notes:
  265. - matching of path patterns has been aligned with borg storing relative paths.
  266. Borg archives file paths without leading slashes. Previously, include/exclude
  267. patterns could contain leading slashes. You should check your patterns and
  268. remove leading slashes.
  269. - dropped support / testing for older Pythons, minimum requirement is 3.8.
  270. In case your OS does not provide Python >= 3.8, consider using our binary,
  271. which does not need an external Python interpreter. Or continue using
  272. borg 1.1.x, which is still supported.
  273. - freeing repository space only happens when "borg compact" is invoked.
  274. - mount: the default for --numeric-ids is False now (same as borg extract)
  275. - borg create --noatime is deprecated. Not storing atime is the default behaviour
  276. now (use --atime if you want to store the atime).
  277. - list: corrected mix-up of "isomtime" and "mtime" formats.
  278. Previously, "isomtime" was the default but produced a verbose human format,
  279. while "mtime" produced a ISO-8601-like format.
  280. The behaviours have been swapped (so "mtime" is human, "isomtime" is ISO-like),
  281. and the default is now "mtime".
  282. "isomtime" is now a real ISO-8601 format ("T" between date and time, not a space).
  283. - create/recreate --list: file status for all files used to get announced *AFTER*
  284. the file (with borg < 1.2). Now, file status is announced *BEFORE* the file
  285. contents are processed. If the file status changes later (e.g. due to an error
  286. or a content change), the updated/final file status will be printed again.
  287. - removed deprecated-since-long stuff (deprecated since):
  288. - command "borg change-passphrase" (2017-02), use "borg key ..."
  289. - option "--keep-tag-files" (2017-01), use "--keep-exclude-tags"
  290. - option "--list-format" (2017-10), use "--format"
  291. - option "--ignore-inode" (2017-09), use "--files-cache" w/o "inode"
  292. - option "--no-files-cache" (2017-09), use "--files-cache=disabled"
  293. - removed BORG_HOSTNAME_IS_UNIQUE env var.
  294. to use borg you must implement one of these 2 scenarios:
  295. - 1) the combination of FQDN and result of uuid.getnode() must be unique
  296. and stable (this should be the case for almost everybody, except when
  297. having duplicate FQDN *and* MAC address or all-zero MAC address)
  298. - 2) if you are aware that 1) is not the case for you, you must set
  299. BORG_HOST_ID env var to something unique.
  300. - exit with 128 + signal number, #5161.
  301. if you have scripts expecting rc == 2 for a signal exit, you need to update
  302. them to check for >= 128.
  303. Fixes:
  304. - diff: reduce memory consumption, fix is_hardlink_master, #6295
  305. - compact: fix / improve freeable / freed space log output
  306. - derive really freed space from quota use before/after, #5679
  307. - do not say "freeable", but "maybe freeable" (based on hint, unsure)
  308. - fix race conditions in internal SaveFile function, #6306 #6028
  309. - implement internal safe_unlink (was: truncate_and_unlink) function more safely:
  310. usually it does not truncate any more, only under "disk full" circumstances
  311. and only if there is only one hardlink.
  312. see: https://github.com/borgbackup/borg/discussions/6286
  313. Other changes:
  314. - info: use a pre12-meta cache to accelerate stats for borg < 1.2 archives.
  315. the first time borg info is invoked on a borg 1.1 repo, it can take a
  316. rather long time computing and caching some stats values for 1.1 archives,
  317. which borg 1.2 archives have in their archive metadata structure.
  318. be patient, esp. if you have lots of old archives.
  319. following invocations are much faster due to the cache.
  320. related change: add archive name to calc_stats progress display.
  321. - docs:
  322. - add borg 1.2 upgrade notes, #6217
  323. - link to borg placeholders and borg patterns help
  324. - init: explain the encryption modes better
  325. - clarify usage of patternfile roots
  326. - put import-tar docs into same file as export-tar docs
  327. - explain the difference between a path that ends with or without a slash,
  328. #6297

  841. Version 1.2.0a2 and earlier (2019-02-24)
  842. ----------------------------------------
  843. New features:
  844. - compact: "borg compact" needs to be used to free repository space by
  845. compacting the segments (reading sparse segments, rewriting still needed
  846. data to new segments, deleting the sparse segments).
  847. Borg < 1.2 invoked compaction automatically at the end of each repository
  848. writing command.
  849. Borg >= 1.2 does not do that any more to give better speed, more control,
  850. more segment file stability (== less stuff moving to newer segments) and
  851. more robustness.
  852. See the docs about "borg compact" for more details.
  853. - "borg compact --cleanup-commits" is to cleanup the tons of 17byte long
  854. commit-only segment files caused by borg 1.1.x issue #2850.
  855. Invoke this once after upgrading (the server side) borg to 1.2.
  856. Compaction now automatically removes unneeded commit-only segment files.
  857. - prune: Show which rule was applied to keep archive, #2886
  858. - add fixed blocksize chunker (see --chunker-params docs), #1086

  862. - add O_NOFOLLOW to base flags, #908
  863. - compact:
  864. - require >10% freeable space in a segment, #2985
  865. - repository compaction now automatically removes unneeded 17byte
  866. commit-only segments, #2850
  867. - make swidth available on all posix platforms, #2667
  868. Other changes:
  869. - repository: better speed and less stuff moving around by using separate
  870. segment files for manifest DELETEs and PUTs, #3947

  901. Version 1.1.18 (2022-06-05)
  902. ---------------------------
  903. Compatibility notes:
  904. - When upgrading from borg 1.0.x to 1.1.x, please note:
  905. - read all the compatibility notes for 1.1.0*, starting from 1.1.0b1.
  906. - borg upgrade: you do not need to and you also should not run it.
  907. - borg might ask some security-related questions once after upgrading.
  908. You can answer them either manually or via environment variable.
  909. One known case is if you use unencrypted repositories, then it will ask
  910. about a unknown unencrypted repository one time.
  911. - your first backup with 1.1.x might be significantly slower (it might
  912. completely read, chunk, hash a lot files) - this is due to the
  913. --files-cache mode change (and happens every time you change mode).
  914. You can avoid the one-time slowdown by using the pre-1.1.0rc4-compatible
  915. mode (but that is less safe for detecting changed files than the default).
  916. See the --files-cache docs for details.
  917. - 1.1.11 removes WSL autodetection (Windows 10 Subsystem for Linux).
  918. If WSL still has a problem with sync_file_range, you need to set
  919. BORG_WORKAROUNDS=basesyncfile in the borg process environment to
  920. work around the WSL issue.
  921. - 1.1.14 changes return codes due to a bug fix:
  922. In case you have scripts expecting rc == 2 for a signal exit, you need to
  923. update them to check for >= 128 (as documented since long).
  924. - 1.1.15 drops python 3.4 support, minimum requirement is 3.5 now.
  925. - 1.1.17 install_requires the "packaging" pypi package now.
  926. New features:
  927. - check --repair: significantly speed up search for next valid object in segment, #6022
  928. - create: add retry_erofs workaround for O_NOATIME issue on volume shadow copies in WSL1, #6024
  929. - key export: display key if path is '-' or not given, #6092
  930. - list --format: add command_line to format keys, #6108

  944. - prettier error msg (no stacktrace) if exclude file is missing, #5734
  945. - do not require BORG_CONFIG_DIR if BORG_{SECURITY,KEYS}_DIR are set, #5979
  946. - atomically create the CACHE_TAG file, #6028
  947. - deal with the SaveFile/SyncFile race, docs, see #6176 5c5b59bc9
  948. - avoid expanding path into LHS of formatting operation + tests, #6064 #6063
  949. - repository: quota / compactable computation fixes, #6119.
  950. This is mainly to keep the repo code in sync with borg 1.2. As borg 1.1
  951. compacts immediately, there was not really an issue with this in 1.1.
  952. - fix transaction rollback: use files cache filename as found in txn.active, #6353
  953. - do not load files cache for commands not using it, fixes #5673

  1034. Version 1.1.17 (2021-07-12)
  1035. ---------------------------
  1036. Compatibility notes:
1037. - When upgrading from borg 1.0.x to 1.1.x, please note:
1038. - read all the compatibility notes for 1.1.0*, starting from 1.1.0b1.
1039. - borg upgrade: you do not need to and you also should not run it.
1040. - borg might ask some security-related questions once after upgrading.
1041. You can answer them either manually or via environment variable.
1042. One known case is if you use unencrypted repositories, then it will ask
1043. about a unknown unencrypted repository one time.
1044. - your first backup with 1.1.x might be significantly slower (it might
1045. completely read, chunk, hash a lot files) - this is due to the
1046. --files-cache mode change (and happens every time you change mode).
1047. You can avoid the one-time slowdown by using the pre-1.1.0rc4-compatible
1048. mode (but that is less safe for detecting changed files than the default).
1049. See the --files-cache docs for details.
1050. - 1.1.11 removes WSL autodetection (Windows 10 Subsystem for Linux).
1051. If WSL still has a problem with sync_file_range, you need to set
1052. BORG_WORKAROUNDS=basesyncfile in the borg process environment to
1053. work around the WSL issue.
1054. - 1.1.14 changes return codes due to a bug fix:
1055. In case you have scripts expecting rc == 2 for a signal exit, you need to
1056. update them to check for >= 128 (as documented since long).
  1057. - 1.1.15 drops python 3.4 support, minimum requirement is 3.5 now.

  1067. New features:
  1068. - implement BORG_SELFTEST env variable, #5871.
1069. this can be used to accelerate borg startup a bit. not recommended for
1070. normal usage, but borg mass hosters with a lot of borg invocations can
1071. save some resources with this. on my laptop, this saved ~100ms cpu time
1072. (sys+user) per borg command invocation.
1073. - implement BORG_LIBC env variable to give the libc filename, #5870.
1074. you can use this if a borg does not find your libc.
1075. - check: add progress indicator for archive check.
1076. - allow --files-cache=size (not recommended, make sure you know what you do)
  1077. Other changes:
  1078. - Python 3.10 now officially supported!
1079. we test on py310-dev on github CI since a while and now also on the vagrant
1080. machines, so it should work ok.
1081. - github CI: test on py310 (again)

1106. - use latest Cython 0.29.23 for py310 compat fixes.
1107. - more RAM for openindiana upgrade plan resolver, it just hangs (swaps?) if
1108. there is too little RAM.
1109. - fix install_pyenv to adapt to recent changes in pyenv (same as in master now).
1110. - use generic/netbsd9 box, copied from master branch.

  1120. storage_quota, #5639.
1121. please note: when setting a non-int value for this in a repo config,
1122. using the repo will require borg >= 1.1.16.
  1123. New features:
1124. - bundled msgpack: drop support for old buffer protocol to support Python 3.10
  1125. - verbose files cache logging via --debug-topic=files_cache, #5659.
1126. Use this if you suspect that borg does not detect unmodified files as expected.
  1127. - create/extract: add --noxattrs and --noacls option, #3955.
1128. when given with borg create, borg will not get xattrs / ACLs from input files
1129. (and thus, it will not archive xattrs / ACLs). when given with borg extract,
1130. borg will not read xattrs / ACLs from archive and will not set xattrs / ACLs
  1131. on extracted files.
  1132. - diff: add --json-lines option, #3765
1133. - check: debug log segment filename
  1134. - borg debug dump-hints

1149. - recommend running tests only on installed versions for setup
  1150. - add link back to git-installation
  1151. - remove /var/cache exclusion in example commands, #5625.
1152. This is generally a poor idea and shouldn't be promoted through examples.

1163. after an exception with xattr-setting happened.
  1164. - export-tar:

  1257. ---------------------------
  1258. Compatibility notes:
1259. - When upgrading from borg 1.0.x to 1.1.x, please note:
1260. - read all the compatibility notes for 1.1.0*, starting from 1.1.0b1.
1261. - borg upgrade: you do not need to and you also should not run it.
1262. - borg might ask some security-related questions once after upgrading.
1263. You can answer them either manually or via environment variable.
1264. One known case is if you use unencrypted repositories, then it will ask
1265. about a unknown unencrypted repository one time.
1266. - your first backup with 1.1.x might be significantly slower (it might
1267. completely read, chunk, hash a lot files) - this is due to the
1268. --files-cache mode change (and happens every time you change mode).
1269. You can avoid the one-time slowdown by using the pre-1.1.0rc4-compatible
1270. mode (but that is less safe for detecting changed files than the default).
1271. See the --files-cache docs for details.
1272. - 1.1.11 removes WSL autodetection (Windows 10 Subsystem for Linux).
1273. If WSL still has a problem with sync_file_range, you need to set
1274. BORG_WORKAROUNDS=basesyncfile in the borg process environment to
1275. work around the WSL issue.

1316. - borg upgrade: you do not need to and you also should not run it.
1317. - borg might ask some security-related questions once after upgrading.
1318. You can answer them either manually or via environment variable.
1319. One known case is if you use unencrypted repositories, then it will ask
1320. about a unknown unencrypted repository one time.
1321. - your first backup with 1.1.x might be significantly slower (it might
1322. completely read, chunk, hash a lot files) - this is due to the
1323. --files-cache mode change (and happens every time you change mode).
1324. You can avoid the one-time slowdown by using the pre-1.1.0rc4-compatible
1325. mode (but that is less safe for detecting changed files than the default).
1326. See the --files-cache docs for details.
1327. - 1.1.11 removes WSL autodetection (Windows 10 Subsystem for Linux).
1328. If WSL still has a problem with sync_file_range, you need to set
1329. BORG_WORKAROUNDS=basesyncfile in the borg process environment to
1330. work around the WSL issue.
  1331. Fixes:
1332. - fixed potential index corruption / data loss issue due to bug in hashindex_set, #4829.
1333. Please read and follow the more detailed notes close to the top of this document.

  1628. Compatibility notes:
  1629. - 1.1.5 changes:
  1630. - require msgpack-python >= 0.4.6 and < 0.5.0.
1631. 0.5.0+ dropped python 3.4 testing and also caused some other issues because

  1688. Version 1.1.4 (2017-12-31)
  1689. --------------------------
  1690. Compatibility notes:
1691. - When upgrading from borg 1.0.x to 1.1.x, please note:
1692. - read all the compatibility notes for 1.1.0*, starting from 1.1.0b1.
1693. - borg upgrade: you do not need to and you also should not run it.
1694. - borg might ask some security-related questions once after upgrading.
1695. You can answer them either manually or via environment variable.
1696. One known case is if you use unencrypted repositories, then it will ask
1697. about a unknown unencrypted repository one time.
1698. - your first backup with 1.1.x might be significantly slower (it might
1699. completely read, chunk, hash a lot files) - this is due to the
1700. --files-cache mode change (and happens every time you change mode).
1701. You can avoid the one-time slowdown by using the pre-1.1.0rc4-compatible
1702. mode (but that is less safe for detecting changed files than the default).
1703. See the --files-cache docs for details.
  1704. - borg 1.1.4 changes:
1705. - zstd compression is new in borg 1.1.4, older borg can't handle it.
1706. - new minimum requirements for the compression libraries - if the required
1707. versions (header and lib) can't be found at build time, bundled code will
  1708. be used:
  1709. - added requirement: libzstd >= 1.3.0 (bundled: 1.3.2)
  1710. - updated requirement: liblz4 >= 1.7.0 / r129 (bundled: 1.8.0)
  1711. Fixes:
1712. - check: data corruption fix: fix for borg check --repair malfunction, #3444.
1713. See the more detailed notes close to the top of this document.
1714. - delete: also delete security dir when deleting a repo, #3427
1715. - prune: fix building the "borg prune" man page, #3398
1716. - init: use given --storage-quota for local repo, #3470

  1727. - exclude broken pytest 3.3.0 release
  1728. - updated fish/bash completions
1729. - init: more clear exception messages for borg create, #3465

1732. - don't generate HTML docs page for borgfs, #3404
  1733. - docs update for lz4 b2 zstd changes
1734. - add zstd to compression help, readme, docs
1735. - update requirements and install docs about bundled lz4 and zstd
1736. - refactored build of the compress and crypto.low_level extensions, #3415:
  1737. - move some lib/build related code to setup_{zstd,lz4,b2}.py
  1738. - bundle lz4 1.8.0 (requirement: >= 1.7.0 / r129)
  1739. - bundle zstd 1.3.2 (requirement: >= 1.3.0)
  1740. - blake2 was already bundled
1741. - rename BORG_LZ4_PREFIX env var to BORG_LIBLZ4_PREFIX for better consistency:
1742. we also have BORG_LIBB2_PREFIX and BORG_LIBZSTD_PREFIX now.
  1743. - add prefer_system_lib* = True settings to setup.py - by default the build
1744. will prefer a shared library over the bundled code, if library and headers
1745. can be found and meet the minimum requirements.
  1746. Version 1.1.3 (2017-11-27)
  1747. --------------------------
  1748. Fixes:
1749. - Security Fix for CVE-2017-15914: Incorrect implementation of access controls
1750. allows remote users to override repository restrictions in Borg servers.
1751. A user able to access a remote Borg SSH server is able to circumvent access
  1752. controls post-authentication.
  1753. Affected releases: 1.1.0, 1.1.1, 1.1.2. Releases 1.0.x are NOT affected.
1754. - crc32: deal with unaligned buffer, add tests - this broke borg on older ARM
1755. CPUs that can not deal with unaligned 32bit memory accesses and raise a bus
1756. error in such cases. the fix might also improve performance on some CPUs as
1757. all 32bit memory accesses by the crc32 code are properly aligned now. #3317
1758. - mount: fixed support of --consider-part-files and do not show .borg_part_N
1759. files by default in the mounted FUSE filesystem. #3347
1760. - fixed cache/repo timestamp inconsistency message, highlight that information
1761. is obtained from security dir (deleting the cache will not bypass this error
1762. in case the user knows this is a legitimate repo).
  1763. - borgfs: don't show sub-command in borgfs help, #3287
1764. - create: show an error when --dry-run and --stats are used together, #3298
  1765. New features:
1766. - mount: added exclusion group options and paths, #2138
1767. Reused some code to support similar options/paths as borg extract offers -
1768. making good use of these to mount only a smaller subset of dirs/files can
1769. speed up mounting a lot and also will consume way less memory.
1770. borg mount [options] repo_or_archive mountpoint path [paths...]
1771. paths: you can just give some "root paths" (like for borg extract) to
1772. only partially populate the FUSE filesystem.
  1773. new options: --exclude[-from], --pattern[s-from], --strip-components
  1774. - create/extract: support st_birthtime on platforms supporting it, #3272
1775. - add "borg config" command for querying/setting/deleting config values, #3304
  1776. Other changes:
1777. - clean up and simplify packaging (only package committed files, do not install
  1778. .c/.h/.pyx files)
  1779. - docs:
1780. - point out tuning options for borg create, #3239
1781. - add instructions for using ntfsclone, zerofree, #81
1782. - move image backup-related FAQ entries to a new page
1783. - clarify key aliases for borg list --format, #3111

1790. - clarify encrypted key format for borg key export, #3296
1791. - update release checklist about security fixes
1792. - document good and problematic option placements, fix examples, #3356
1793. - add note about using --nobsdflags to avoid speed penalty related to
  1794. bsdflags, #3239
1795. - move most of support section to www.borgbackup.org
  1796. Version 1.1.2 (2017-11-05)
  1797. --------------------------
  1798. Fixes:
1799. - fix KeyError crash when talking to borg server < 1.0.7, #3244
1800. - extract: set bsdflags last (include immutable flag), #3263
1801. - create: don't do stat() call on excluded-norecurse directory, fix exception
1802. handling for stat() call, #3209
1803. - create --stats: do not count data volume twice when checkpointing, #3224
1804. - recreate: move chunks_healthy when excluding hardlink master, #3228
1805. - recreate: get rid of chunks_healthy when rechunking (does not match), #3218
1806. - check: get rid of already existing not matching chunks_healthy metadata, #3218
1807. - list: fix stdout broken pipe handling, #3245
  1808. - list/diff: remove tag-file options (not used), #3226
  1809. New features:
1810. - bash, zsh and fish shell auto-completions, see scripts/shell_completions/
  1811. - added BORG_CONFIG_DIR env var, #3083
  1812. Other changes:
  1813. - docs:
1814. - clarify using a blank passphrase in keyfile mode
  1815. - mention "!" (exclude-norecurse) type in "patterns" help
1816. - document to first heal before running borg recreate to re-chunk stuff,
1817. because that will have to get rid of chunks_healthy metadata.
  1818. - more than 23 is not supported for CHUNK_MAX_EXP, #3115
1819. - borg does not respect nodump flag by default any more
  1820. - clarify same-filesystem requirement for borg upgrade, #2083
  1821. - update / rephrase cygwin / WSL status, #3174
  1822. - improve docs about --stats, #3260
1823. - vagrant: openindiana new clang package
1824. Already contained in 1.1.1 (last minute fix):
1825. - arg parsing: fix fallback function, refactor, #3205. This is a fixup
1826. for #3155, which was broken on at least python <= 3.4.2.
  1827. Version 1.1.1 (2017-10-22)
  1828. --------------------------
  1829. Compatibility notes:
  1830. - The deprecated --no-files-cache is not a global/common option any more,
1831. but only available for borg create (it is not needed for anything else).
  1832. Use --files-cache=disabled instead of --no-files-cache.
1833. - The nodump flag ("do not back up this file") is not honoured any more by
1834. default because this functionality (esp. if it happened by error or
1835. unexpected) was rather confusing and unexplainable at first to users.
1836. If you want that "do not back up NODUMP-flagged files" behaviour, use:
  1837. borg create --exclude-nodump ...
1838. - If you are on Linux and do not need bsdflags archived, consider using
1839. ``--nobsdflags`` with ``borg create`` to avoid additional syscalls and
  1840. speed up backup creation.
  1841. Fixes:
1842. - borg recreate: correctly compute part file sizes. fixes cosmetic, but
1843. annoying issue as borg check complains about size inconsistencies of part
1844. files in affected archives. you can solve that by running borg recreate on
1845. these archives, see also #3157.
1846. - bsdflags support: do not open BLK/CHR/LNK files, avoid crashes and
  1847. slowness, #3130
  1848. - recreate: don't crash on attic archives w/o time_end, #3109
  1849. - don't crash on repository filesystems w/o hardlink support, #3107
  1850. - don't crash in first part of truncate_and_unlink, #3117
  1851. - fix server-side IndexError crash with clients < 1.0.7, #3192
1852. - don't show traceback if only a global option is given, show help, #3142
1853. - cache: use SaveFile for more safety, #3158
1854. - init: fix wrong encryption choices in command line parser, fix missing
  1855. "authenticated-blake2", #3103
1856. - move --no-files-cache from common to borg create options, #3146
1857. - fix detection of non-local path (failed on ..filename), #3108
1858. - logging with fileConfig: set json attr on "borg" logger, #3114
  1859. - fix crash with relative BORG_KEY_FILE, #3197
1860. - show excluded dir with "x" for tagged dirs / caches, #3189

  1862. - create: --nobsdflags and --exclude-nodump options, #3160
  1863. - extract: --nobsdflags option, #3160

  1866. - vagrant: use self-made FreeBSD 10.3 box, #3022
  1867. - travis: don't brew update, hopefully fixes #2532
  1868. - docs:
1869. - readme: -e option is required in borg 1.1
  1870. - add example showing --show-version --show-rc
1871. - use --format rather than --list-format (deprecated) in example
1872. - update docs about hardlinked symlinks limitation
  1873. Version 1.1.0 (2017-10-07)
  1874. --------------------------
  1875. Compatibility notes:
1876. - borg command line: do not put options in between positional arguments
1877. This sometimes works (e.g. it worked in borg 1.0.x), but can easily stop
1878. working if we make positional arguments optional (like it happened for
1879. borg create's "paths" argument in 1.1). There are also places in borg 1.0
1880. where we do that, so it doesn't work there in general either. #3356
1881. Good: borg create -v --stats repo::archive path
1882. Good: borg create repo::archive path -v --stats
1883. Bad: borg create repo::archive -v --stats path
  1884. Fixes:
  1885. - fix LD_LIBRARY_PATH restoration for subprocesses, #3077
1886. - "auto" compression: make sure expensive compression is actually better,
1887. otherwise store lz4 compressed data we already computed.

  1942. -----------------------------
  1943. Compatibility notes:
1944. - list: corrected mix-up of "isomtime" and "mtime" formats. Previously,
1945. "isomtime" was the default but produced a verbose human format,
  1946. while "mtime" produced a ISO-8601-like format.
1947. The behaviours have been swapped (so "mtime" is human, "isomtime" is ISO-like),
1948. and the default is now "mtime".
1949. "isomtime" is now a real ISO-8601 format ("T" between date and time, not a space).

  2034. Version 1.1.0b6 (2017-06-18)
  2035. ----------------------------
  2036. Compatibility notes:
2037. - Running "borg init" via a "borg serve --append-only" server will *not* create
2038. an append-only repository anymore. Use "borg init --append-only" to initialize
  2039. an append-only repository.
2040. - Repositories in the "repokey" and "repokey-blake2" modes with an empty passphrase
2041. are now treated as unencrypted repositories for security checks (e.g.
  2042. BORG_UNKNOWN_UNENCRYPTED_REPO_ACCESS_IS_OK).
2043. Previously there would be no prompts nor messages if an unknown repository
2044. in one of these modes with an empty passphrase was encountered. This would
2045. allow an attacker to swap a repository, if one assumed that the lack of
2046. password prompts was due to a set BORG_PASSPHRASE.
2047. Since the "trick" does not work if BORG_PASSPHRASE is set, this does generally
  2048. not affect scripts.
2049. - Repositories in the "authenticated" mode are now treated as the unencrypted
  2050. repositories they are.
2051. - The client-side temporary repository cache now holds unencrypted data for better speed.
2052. - borg init: removed the short form of --append-only (-a).
2053. - borg upgrade: removed the short form of --inplace (-i).
  2054. New features:
2055. - reimplemented the RepositoryCache, size-limited caching of decrypted repo
  2056. contents, integrity checked via xxh64. #2515
2057. - reduced space usage of chunks.archive.d. Existing caches are migrated during
  2058. a cache sync. #235 #2638
2059. - integrity checking using xxh64 for important files used by borg, #1101:
2060. - repository: index and hints files
2061. - cache: chunks and files caches, chunks.archive.d

2693. this fixes some sporadic, but severe performance breakdowns.
2694. - Archive: allocate zeros when needed, #2308
2695. fixes huge memory usage of mount (8 MiB × number of archives)
  2696. - IPv6 address support
2697. also: Location: more informative exception when parsing fails
  2698. - borg single-file binary: use pyinstaller v3.2.1, #2396

  2729. - added BORG_PASSCOMMAND environment variable, #2573
2730. - add minimal version of in repository mandatory feature flags, #2134
2731. This should allow us to make sure older borg versions can be cleanly
2732. prevented from doing operations that are no longer safe because of
2733. repository format evolution. This allows more fine grained control than
2734. just incrementing the manifest version. So for example a change that
2735. still allows new archives to be created but would corrupt the repository
2736. when an old version tries to delete an archive or check the repository
2737. would add the new feature to the check and delete set but leave it out
  2738. of the write set.

2776. to break was fixed in cygwin at least since cygwin 2.8, maybe even since
  2777. 2.7.0).
2778. - remove skipping the noatime tests on GNU/Hurd, #2710
2779. - fix borg import issue, add comment, #2718

2787. or is set inconsistently across computers accessing the same repository, #2115
2788. - Fixed testing regression in 1.0.10rc1 that lead to a hard dependency on

2791. - "key export" can now generate a printable HTML page with both a QR code and
2792. a human-readable "paperkey" representation (and custom text) through the
  2793. ``--qr-html`` option.
2794. The same functionality is also available through `paperkey.html <paperkey.html>`_,
2795. which is the same HTML page generated by ``--qr-html``. It works with existing
2796. "key export" files and key files.
  2797. Other changes:
  2798. - docs:
2799. - language clarification - "borg create --one-file-system" option does not respect
2800. mount points, but considers different file systems instead, #2141
  2801. - setup.py: build_api: sort file list for determinism
  2802. Version 1.0.10rc1 (2017-01-29)
  2803. ------------------------------

  2858. - make LoggedIO.close_segment reentrant, avoid reentrance
  2859. Version 1.0.9 (2016-12-20)
  2860. --------------------------
  2861. Security fixes:
2862. - A flaw in the cryptographic authentication scheme in Borg allowed an attacker
2863. to spoof the manifest. See :ref:`tam_vuln` above for the steps you should
  2864. take.
2865. CVE-2016-10099 was assigned to this vulnerability.
2866. - borg check: When rebuilding the manifest (which should only be needed very rarely)
2867. duplicate archive names would be handled on a "first come first serve" basis,
2868. potentially opening an attack vector to replace archives.
2869. Example: were there 2 archives named "foo" in a repo (which can not happen
2870. under normal circumstances, because borg checks if the name is already used)
2871. and a "borg check" recreated a (previously lost) manifest, the first of the
2872. archives it encountered would be in the manifest. The second archive is also
2873. still in the repo, but not referenced in the manifest, in this case. If the
2874. second archive is the "correct" one (and was previously referenced from the
2875. manifest), it looks like it got replaced by the first one. In the manifest,
2876. it actually got replaced. Both remain in the repo but the "correct" one is no
2877. longer accessible via normal means - the manifest.
2878. CVE-2016-10100 was assigned to this vulnerability.
  2879. Bug fixes:
  2880. - borg check:
  2881. - rebuild manifest if it's corrupted

2907. - fix incorrectly reporting attic 0.13 and earlier archives as corrupt

  2912. New features:
  2913. - borg umount <mountpoint>
2914. exposed already existing umount code via the CLI api, so users can use it,
2915. which is more consistent than using borg to mount and fusermount -u (or
  2916. umount) to un-mount, #1855.
2917. - implement borg create --noatime --noctime, fixes #1853
  2918. Other changes:

2941. - remove llfuse from tox.ini at a central place
2942. - do not try to install llfuse on centos6

2944. - add windows virtual machine with cygwin
  2945. - Vagrantfile cleanup / code deduplication
  2946. Version 1.0.8 (2016-10-29)
  2947. --------------------------
  2948. Bug fixes:
  2949. - RemoteRepository: Fix busy wait in call_many, #940
  2950. New features:
  2951. - implement borgmajor/borgminor/borgpatch placeholders, #1694
2952. {borgversion} was already there (full version string). With the new
2953. placeholders you can now also get e.g. 1 or 1.0 or 1.0.8.
  2954. Other changes:
  2955. - avoid previous_location mismatch, #1741
2956. due to the changed canonicalization for relative paths in PR #1711 / #1655
2957. (implement /./ relpath hack), there would be a changed repo location warning
2958. and the user would be asked if this is ok. this would break automation and
2959. require manual intervention, which is unwanted.
2960. thus, we automatically fix the previous_location config entry, if it only
2961. changed in the expected way, but still means the same location.
  2962. - docs:
2963. - deployment.rst: do not use bare variables in ansible snippet

2979. Ctrl-C) or lost connections or systemd sending SIGHUP.
2980. - progress display: adapt formatting to narrow screens, do not crash, #1628
  2981. - borg create --read-special - fix crash on broken symlink, #1584.
2982. also correctly processes broken symlinks. before this regressed to a crash
  2983. (5b45385) a broken symlink would've been skipped.
  2984. - process_symlink: fix missing backup_io()
2985. Fixes a chmod/chown/chgrp/unlink/rename/... crash race between getting
2986. dirents and dispatching to process_symlink.
2987. - yes(): abort on wrong answers, saying so, #1622

  3001. New features:
3002. - add "borg key export" / "borg key import" commands, #1555, so users are able
3003. to back up / restore their encryption keys more easily.
3004. Supported formats are the keyfile format used by borg internally and a
3005. special "paper" format with by line checksums for printed backups. For the
3006. paper format, the import is an interactive process which checks each line as
3007. soon as it is input.

  3009. #1352

  3050. - fuse_mount contextmanager: accept any options
  3051. Version 1.0.7 (2016-08-19)
  3052. --------------------------
  3053. Security fixes:
3054. - borg serve: fix security issue with remote repository access, #1428
3055. If you used e.g. --restrict-to-path /path/client1/ (with or without trailing
3056. slash does not make a difference), it acted like a path prefix match using
3057. /path/client1 (note the missing trailing slash) - the code then also allowed
  3058. working in e.g. /path/client13 or /path/client1000.
3059. As this could accidentally lead to major security/privacy issues depending on
3060. the paths you use, the behaviour was changed to be a strict directory match.
3061. That means --restrict-to-path /path/client1 (with or without trailing slash
3062. does not make a difference) now uses /path/client1/ internally (note the
3063. trailing slash here!) for matching and allows precisely that path AND any
3064. path below it. So, /path/client1 is allowed, /path/client1/repo1 is allowed,
  3065. but not /path/client13 or /path/client1000.
3066. If you willingly used the undocumented (dangerous) previous behaviour, you
3067. may need to rearrange your --restrict-to-path paths now. We are sorry if
3068. that causes work for you, but we did not want a potentially dangerous
3069. behaviour in the software (not even using a for-backwards-compat option).
  3070. Bug fixes:
3071. - fixed repeated LockTimeout exceptions when borg serve tried to write into
  3072. a already write-locked repo (e.g. by a borg mount), #502 part b)
3073. This was solved by the fix for #1220 in 1.0.7rc1 already.
3074. - fix cosmetics + file leftover for "not a valid borg repository", #1490
3075. - Cache: release lock if cache is invalid, #1501
3076. - borg extract --strip-components: fix leak of preloaded chunk contents
3077. - Repository, when a InvalidRepository exception happens:
  3078. - fix spurious, empty lock.roster
3079. - fix repo not closed cleanly
  3080. New features:
  3081. - implement borg debug-info, fixes #1122
3082. (just calls already existing code via cli, same output as below tracebacks)
  3083. Other changes:
3084. - skip the O_NOATIME test on GNU Hurd, fixes #1315
3085. (this is a very minor issue and the GNU Hurd project knows the bug)
3086. - document using a clean repo to test / build the release
  3087. Version 1.0.7rc2 (2016-08-13)
  3088. -----------------------------
  3089. Bug fixes:
3090. - do not write objects to repository that are bigger than the allowed size,
3091. borg will reject reading them, #1451.
3092. Important: if you created archives with many millions of files or
3093. directories, please verify if you can open them successfully,
  3094. e.g. try a "borg list REPO::ARCHIVE".
3095. - lz4 compression: dynamically enlarge the (de)compression buffer, the static
3096. buffer was not big enough for archives with extremely many items, #1453
3097. - larger item metadata stream chunks, raise archive item limit by 8x, #1452
3098. - fix untracked segments made by moved DELETEs, #1442
3099. Impact: Previously (metadata) segments could become untracked when deleting data,
3100. these would never be cleaned up.
3101. - extended attributes (xattrs) related fixes:
3102. - fixed a race condition in xattrs querying that led to the entire file not
3103. being backed up (while logging the error, exit code = 1), #1469
3104. - fixed a race condition in xattrs querying that led to a crash, #1462
3105. - raise OSError including the error message derived from errno, deal with
3106. path being a integer FD
  3107. Other changes:
3108. - print active env var override by default, #1467
3109. - xattr module: refactor code, deduplicate, clean up
3110. - repository: split object size check into too small and too big
3111. - add a transaction_id assertion, so borg init on a broken (inconsistent)
3112. filesystem does not look like a coding error in borg, but points to the
  3113. real problem.
3114. - explain confusing TypeError caused by compat support for old servers, #1456
3115. - add forgotten usage help file from build_usage
3116. - refactor/unify buffer code into helpers.Buffer class, add tests
  3117. - docs:
  3118. - document archive limitation, #1452
  3119. - improve prune examples
  3120. Version 1.0.7rc1 (2016-08-05)
  3121. -----------------------------
  3122. Bug fixes:
3123. - fix repo lock deadlocks (related to lock upgrade), #1220
  3124. - catch unpacker exceptions, resync, #1351
  3125. - fix borg break-lock ignoring BORG_REPO env var, #1324
3126. - files cache performance fixes (fixes unnecessary re-reading/chunking/
3127. hashing of unmodified files for some use cases):
3128. - fix unintended file cache eviction, #1430
3129. - implement BORG_FILES_CACHE_TTL, update FAQ, raise default TTL from 10
  3130. to 20, #1338
  3131. - FUSE:
3132. - cache partially read data chunks (performance), #965, #966
  3133. - always create a root dir, #1125
3134. - use an OrderedDict for helptext, making the build reproducible, #1346
3135. - RemoteRepository init: always call close on exceptions, #1370 (cosmetic)
  3136. - ignore stdout/stderr broken pipe errors (cosmetic), #1116
  3137. New features:
3138. - better borg versions management support (useful esp. for borg servers
3139. wanting to offer multiple borg versions and for clients wanting to choose
  3140. a specific server borg version), #1392:
3141. - add BORG_VERSION environment variable before executing "borg serve" via ssh
  3142. - add new placeholder {borgversion}
  3143. - substitute placeholders in --remote-path
3144. - borg init --append-only option (makes using the more secure append-only mode
3145. more convenient. when used remotely, this requires 1.0.7+ also on the borg
  3146. server), #1291.
  3147. Other changes:
  3148. - Vagrantfile:
  3149. - darwin64: upgrade to FUSE for macOS 3.4.1 (aka osxfuse), #1378
3150. - xenial64: use user "ubuntu", not "vagrant" (as usual), #1331
  3151. - tests:
  3152. - fix FUSE tests on OS X, #1433
  3153. - docs:
3154. - FAQ: add backup using stable filesystem names recommendation
3155. - FAQ about glibc compatibility added, #491, glibc-check improved
3156. - FAQ: 'A' unchanged file; remove ambiguous entry age sentence.
3157. - OS X: install pkg-config to build with FUSE support, fixes #1400
3158. - add notes about shell/sudo pitfalls with env. vars, #1380
3159. - added platform feature matrix
  3160. - implement borg debug-dump-repo-objs
  3161. Version 1.0.6 (2016-07-12)
  3162. --------------------------
  3163. Bug fixes:
  3164. - Linux: handle multiple LD_PRELOAD entries correctly, #1314, #1111
3165. - Fix crash with unclear message if the libc is not found, #1314, #1111
  3166. Other changes:
  3167. - tests:
3168. - Fixed O_NOATIME tests for Solaris and GNU Hurd, #1315
3169. - Fixed sparse file tests for (file) systems not supporting it, #1310
  3170. - docs:
  3171. - Fixed syntax highlighting, #1313
3172. - misc docs: added data processing overview picture
  3173. Version 1.0.6rc1 (2016-07-10)
  3174. -----------------------------
  3175. New features:
3176. - borg check --repair: heal damaged files if missing chunks re-appear (e.g. if
3177. the previously missing chunk was added again in a later backup archive),
  3178. #148. (*) Also improved logging.
  3179. Bug fixes:
  3180. - sync_dir: silence fsync() failing with EINVAL, #1287
3181. Some network filesystems (like smbfs) don't support this and we use this in
  3182. repository code.
  3183. - borg mount (FUSE):
3184. - fix directories being shadowed when contained paths were also specified,
  3185. #1295
3186. - raise I/O Error (EIO) on damaged files (unless -o allow_damaged_files is
  3187. used), #1302. (*)
3188. - borg extract: warn if a damaged file is extracted, #1299. (*)
3189. - Added some missing return code checks (ChunkIndex._add, hashindex_resize).
3190. - borg check: fix/optimize initial hash table size, avoids resize of the table.
  3191. Other changes:
  3192. - tests:
  3193. - add more FUSE tests, #1284
  3194. - deduplicate FUSE (u)mount code
3195. - fix borg binary test issues, #862
  3196. - docs:
3197. - changelog: added release dates to older borg releases
3198. - fix some sphinx (docs generator) warnings, #881
  3199. Notes:
3200. (*) Some features depend on information (chunks_healthy list) added to item
3201. metadata when a file with missing chunks was "repaired" using all-zero
3202. replacement chunks. The chunks_healthy list is generated since borg 1.0.4,
3203. thus borg can't recognize such "repaired" (but content-damaged) files if the
3204. repair was done with an older borg version.
  3205. Version 1.0.5 (2016-07-07)
  3206. --------------------------
  3207. Bug fixes:
3208. - borg mount: fix FUSE crash in xattr code on Linux introduced in 1.0.4, #1282
  3209. Other changes:
3210. - backport some FAQ entries from master branch
3211. - add release helper scripts
  3212. - Vagrantfile:
  3213. - centos6: no FUSE, don't build binary
  3214. - add xz for redhat-like dists
  3215. Version 1.0.4 (2016-07-07)
  3216. --------------------------
  3217. New features:
  3218. - borg serve --append-only, #1168
3219. This was included because it was a simple change (append-only functionality
3220. was already present via repository config file) and makes better security now
  3221. practically usable.
  3222. - BORG_REMOTE_PATH environment variable, #1258
3223. This was included because it was a simple change (--remote-path cli option
3224. was already present) and makes borg much easier to use if you need it.
3225. - Repository: cleanup incomplete transaction on "no space left" condition.
3226. In many cases, this can avoid a 100% full repo filesystem (which is very
3227. problematic as borg always needs free space - even to delete archives).
  3228. Bug fixes:
3229. - Fix wrong handling and reporting of OSErrors in borg create, #1138.
3230. This was a serious issue: in the context of "borg create", errors like
3231. repository I/O errors (e.g. disk I/O errors, ssh repo connection errors)
3232. were handled badly and did not lead to a crash (which would be good for this
3233. case, because the repo transaction would be incomplete and trigger a
3234. transaction rollback to clean up).
3235. Now, error handling for source files is cleanly separated from every other
3236. error handling, so only problematic input files are logged and skipped.
3237. - Implement fail-safe error handling for borg extract.
3238. Note that this isn't nearly as critical as the borg create error handling
3239. bug, since nothing is written to the repo. So this was "merely" misleading
  3240. error reporting.
3241. - Add missing error handler in directory attr restore loop.
3242. - repo: make sure write data hits disk before the commit tag (#1236) and also
  3243. sync the containing directory.
  3244. - FUSE: getxattr fail must use errno.ENOATTR, #1126
3245. (fixes Mac OS X Finder malfunction: "zero bytes" file length, access denied)
3246. - borg check --repair: do not lose information about the good/original chunks.
3247. If we do not lose the original chunk IDs list when "repairing" a file
3248. (replacing missing chunks with all-zero chunks), we have a chance to "heal"
3249. the file back into its original state later, in case the chunks re-appear
3250. (e.g. in a fresh backup). Healing is not implemented yet, see #148.
  3251. - fixes for --read-special mode:
  3252. - ignore known files cache, #1241
  3253. - fake regular file mode, #1214
  3254. - improve symlinks handling, #1215

3257. - add missing placeholder support for --prefix, #1027
3258. - improve exception handling for placeholder replacement
3259. - catch and format exceptions in arg parsing
3260. - helpers: fix "undefined name 'e'" in exception handler
3261. - better error handling for missing repo manifest, #1043
  3262. - borg delete:
3263. - make it possible to delete a repo without manifest
3264. - borg delete --forced allows one to delete corrupted archives, #1139
  3265. - borg check:
3266. - make borg check work for empty repo
3267. - fix resync and msgpacked item qualifier, #1135
3268. - rebuild_manifest: fix crash if 'name' or 'time' key were missing.
3269. - better validation of item metadata dicts, #1130
3270. - better validation of archive metadata dicts
3271. - close the repo on exit - even if rollback did not work, #1197.
3272. This is rather cosmetic, it avoids repo closing in the destructor.
  3273. - tests:
  3274. - fix sparse file test, #1170
  3275. - flake8: ignore new F405, #1185
3276. - catch "invalid argument" on cygwin, #257
3277. - fix sparseness assertion in test prep, #1264
  3278. Other changes:

3287. - support docs: add freenode web chat link, #1175
  3288. - add prune visualization / example, #723
3289. - add note that Fnmatch is default, #1247
3290. - make clear that lzma levels > 6 are a waste of cpu cycles
  3291. - add a "do not edit" note to auto-generated files, #1250
3292. - update cygwin installation docs
3293. - repository interoperability with borg master (1.1dev) branch:
3294. - borg check: read item metadata keys from manifest, #1147
  3295. - read v2 hints files, #1235
3296. - fix hints file "unknown version" error handling bug
  3297. - tests: add tests for format_line
3298. - llfuse: update version requirement for freebsd
  3299. - Vagrantfile:
  3300. - use openbsd 5.9, #716
3301. - do not install llfuse on netbsd (broken)
  3302. - update OSXfuse to version 3.3.3
3303. - use Python 3.5.2 to build the binaries
  3304. - glibc compatibility checker: scripts/glibc_check.py
3305. - add .eggs to .gitignore
  3306. Version 1.0.3 (2016-05-20)
  3307. --------------------------
  3308. Bug fixes:
3309. - prune: avoid that checkpoints are kept and completed archives are deleted in
  3310. a prune run), #997
3311. - prune: fix commandline argument validation - some valid command lines were
3312. considered invalid (annoying, but harmless), #942
3313. - fix capabilities extraction on Linux (set xattrs last, after chown()), #1069
3314. - repository: fix commit tags being seen in data
3315. - when probing key files, do binary reads. avoids crash when non-borg binary
3316. files are located in borg's key files directory.
3317. - handle SIGTERM and make a clean exit - avoids orphan lock files.
3318. - repository cache: don't cache large objects (avoid using lots of temp. disk
  3319. space), #1063
  3320. Other changes:
  3321. - Vagrantfile: OS X: update osxfuse / install lzma package, #933
  3322. - setup.py: add check for platform_darwin.c
3323. - setup.py: on freebsd, use a llfuse release that builds ok

3327. - borg create help: add some words to about the archive name
3328. - borg create help: document format tags, #894
  3329. Version 1.0.2 (2016-04-16)
  3330. --------------------------
  3331. Bug fixes:
3332. - fix malfunction and potential corruption on (nowadays rather rare) big-endian
3333. architectures or bi-endian archs in (rare) BE mode. #886, #889
3334. cache resync / index merge was malfunctioning due to this, potentially
3335. leading to data loss. borg info had cosmetic issues (displayed wrong values).
3336. note: all (widespread) little-endian archs (like x86/x64) or bi-endian archs
3337. in (widespread) LE mode (like ARMEL, MIPSEL, ...) were NOT affected.
3338. - add overflow and range checks for 1st (special) uint32 of the hashindex
  3339. values, switch from int32 to uint32.
3340. - fix so that refcount will never overflow, but just stick to max. value after
3341. a overflow would have occurred.
3342. - borg delete: fix --cache-only for broken caches, #874
3343. Makes --cache-only idempotent: it won't fail if the cache is already deleted.
3344. - fixed borg create --one-file-system erroneously traversing into other
3345. filesystems (if starting fs device number was 0), #873
  3346. - workaround a bug in Linux fadvise FADV_DONTNEED, #907
  3347. Other changes:
3348. - better test coverage for hashindex, incl. overflow testing, checking correct
3349. computations so endianness issues would be discovered.
3350. - reproducible doc for ProgressIndicator*, make the build reproducible.
3351. - use latest llfuse for vagrant machines
  3352. - docs:
  3353. - use /path/to/repo in examples, fixes #901
3354. - fix confusing usage of "repo" as archive name (use "arch")
  3355. Version 1.0.1 (2016-04-08)
  3356. --------------------------
  3357. New features:
3358. Usually there are no new features in a bugfix release, but these were added
3359. due to their high impact on security/safety/speed or because they are fixes
  3360. also:
  3361. - append-only mode for repositories, #809, #36 (see docs)
3362. - borg create: add --ignore-inode option to make borg detect unmodified files
3363. even if your filesystem does not have stable inode numbers (like sshfs and
  3364. possibly CIFS).
3365. - add options --warning, --error, --critical for missing log levels, #826.
3366. it's not recommended to suppress warnings or errors, but the user may decide
  3367. this on his own.
3368. note: --warning is not given to borg serve so a <= 1.0.0 borg will still
3369. work as server (it is not needed as it is the default).
3370. do not use --error or --critical when using a <= 1.0.0 borg server.
  3371. Bug fixes:
  3372. - fix silently skipping EIO, #748
3373. - add context manager for Repository (avoid orphan repository locks), #285
3374. - do not sleep for >60s while waiting for lock, #773
3375. - unpack file stats before passing to FUSE
3376. - fix build on illumos
3377. - don't try to back up doors or event ports (Solaris and derivatives)
  3378. - remove useless/misleading libc version display, #738
3379. - test suite: reset exit code of persistent archiver, #844
3380. - RemoteRepository: clean up pipe if remote open() fails
3381. - Remote: don't print tracebacks for Error exceptions handled downstream, #792
3382. - if BORG_PASSPHRASE is present but wrong, don't prompt for password, but fail
  3383. instead, #791
3384. - ArchiveChecker: move "orphaned objects check skipped" to INFO log level, #826
3385. - fix capitalization, add ellipses, change log level to debug for 2 messages,

  3397. Version 1.0.0 (2016-03-05)
  3398. --------------------------
3399. The major release number change (0.x -> 1.x) indicates bigger incompatible
3400. changes, please read the compatibility notes, adapt / test your scripts and
  3401. check your backup logs.
  3402. Compatibility notes:
  3403. - drop support for python 3.2 and 3.3, require 3.4 or 3.5, #221 #65 #490
3404. note: we provide binaries that include python 3.5.1 and everything else
3405. needed. they are an option in case you are stuck with < 3.4 otherwise.
3406. - change encryption to be on by default (using "repokey" mode)
  3407. - moved keyfile keys from ~/.borg/keys to ~/.config/borg/keys,
3408. you can either move them manually or run "borg upgrade <REPO>"
  3409. - remove support for --encryption=passphrase,
3410. use borg migrate-to-repokey to switch to repokey mode, #97
  3411. - remove deprecated --compression <number>,
  3412. use --compression zlib,<number> instead
3413. in case of 0, you could also use --compression none
  3414. - remove deprecated --hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/yearly
  3415. use --keep-hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/yearly instead
  3416. - remove deprecated --do-not-cross-mountpoints,
  3417. use --one-file-system instead
  3418. - disambiguate -p option, #563:
3419. - -p now is same as --progress
3420. - -P now is same as --prefix
3421. - remove deprecated "borg verify",
3422. use "borg extract --dry-run" instead
  3423. - cleanup environment variable semantics, #355
3424. the environment variables used to be "yes sayers" when set, this was
3425. conceptually generalized to "automatic answerers" and they just give their
3426. value as answer (as if you typed in that value when being asked).
3427. See the "usage" / "Environment Variables" section of the docs for details.
  3428. - change the builtin default for --chunker-params, create 2MiB chunks, #343
  3429. --chunker-params new default: 19,23,21,4095 - old default: 10,23,16,4095
3430. one of the biggest issues with borg < 1.0 (and also attic) was that it had a
3431. default target chunk size of 64kiB, thus it created a lot of chunks and thus
3432. also a huge chunk management overhead (high RAM and disk usage).
3433. please note that the new default won't change the chunks that you already
3434. have in your repository. the new big chunks do not deduplicate with the old
3435. small chunks, so expect your repo to grow at least by the size of every
3436. changed file and in the worst case (e.g. if your files cache was lost / is
3437. not used) by the size of every file (minus any compression you might use).
3438. in case you want to see a much lower resource usage immediately (RAM / disk)
3439. for chunks management, it might be better to start with a new repo than
3440. to continue in the existing repo (with an existing repo, you have to wait
3441. until all archives with small chunks get pruned to see a lower resource
  3442. usage).
3443. if you used the old --chunker-params default value (or if you did not use
3444. --chunker-params option at all) and you'd like to continue using small
3445. chunks (and you accept the huge resource usage that comes with that), just
3446. use explicitly borg create --chunker-params=10,23,16,4095.
3447. - archive timestamps: the 'time' timestamp now refers to archive creation
3448. start time (was: end time), the new 'time_end' timestamp refers to archive
3449. creation end time. This might affect prune if your backups take a long time.
3450. if you give a timestamp via cli, this is stored into 'time'. therefore it now
3451. needs to mean archive creation start time.
  3452. New features:
  3453. - implement password roundtrip, #695
  3454. Bug fixes:
3455. - remote end does not need cache nor keys directories, do not create them, #701

  3474. as borg info, #651
  3475. - llfuse compatibility fixes (now compatible with: 0.40, 0.41, 0.42)
  3476. Other changes:
3477. - it is now possible to use "pip install borgbackup[fuse]" to
3478. install the llfuse dependency automatically, using the correct version requirement
3479. for it. you still need to care about having installed the FUSE / build
3480. related OS package first, though, so that building llfuse can succeed.
  3481. - Vagrant: drop Ubuntu Precise (12.04) - does not have Python >= 3.4
3482. - Vagrant: use pyinstaller v3.1.1 to build binaries
  3483. - docs:
3484. - borg upgrade: add to docs that only LOCAL repos are supported
  3485. - borg upgrade also handles borg 0.xx -> 1.0
3486. - use pip extras or requirements file to install llfuse
3487. - fix order in release process
3488. - updated usage docs and other minor / cosmetic fixes
3489. - verified borg examples in docs, #644

3492. - add a hint about the dev headers needed when installing from source
3493. - add examples for delete (and handle delete after list, before prune), #656
3494. - update example for borg create -v --stats (use iso datetime format), #663
  3495. - added example to BORG_RSH docs
3496. - "connection closed by remote": add FAQ entry and point to issue #636
  3497. Version 1.0.0rc1 (2016-02-07)
  3498. -----------------------------
  3499. New features:
3500. - borg migrate-to-repokey ("passphrase" -> "repokey" encryption key mode)
3501. - implement --short for borg list REPO, #611
3502. - implement --list for borg extract (consistency with borg create)
  3503. - borg serve: overwrite client's --restrict-to-path with ssh forced command's
3504. option value (but keep everything else from the client commandline), #544
  3505. - use $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/keys for keyfile keys (~/.config/borg/keys), #515
3506. - "borg upgrade" moves the keyfile keys to the new location
3507. - display both archive creation start and end time in "borg info", #627
  3508. Bug fixes:
3509. - normalize trailing slashes for the repository path, #606
3510. - Cache: fix exception handling in __init__, release lock, #610
  3511. Other changes:
3512. - suppress unneeded exception context (PEP 409), simpler tracebacks
3513. - removed special code needed to deal with imperfections / incompatibilities /
3514. missing stuff in py 3.2/3.3, simplify code that can be done simpler in 3.4
3515. - removed some version requirements that were kept on old versions because
3516. newer did not support py 3.2 any more
3517. - use some py 3.4+ stdlib code instead of own/openssl/pypi code:
  3518. - use os.urandom instead of own cython openssl RAND_bytes wrapper, #493
3519. - use hashlib.pbkdf2_hmac from py stdlib instead of own openssl wrapper
3520. - use hmac.compare_digest instead of == operator (constant time comparison)
