  1. Changelog
  2. =========
  3. Version 0.30.1
  4. --------------
  5. Compatibility / maintenance notes:
  6. - Python 3.2 is dead and everybody is dropping support for it.
  7. Python 3.3 is rather old and not feeling too well either.
  8. - Thus, 0.30.x is the last borgbackup version that is compatible with python
  9. 3.2 and 3.3, all 1.x.x releases require python 3.4 or 3.5.
  10. - 1.0.0rc1 is already released, use that (and later 1.x.x), if possible.
  11. - 0.30.x releases will get a few critical fixes, so you can use them for
  12. a while, but do not expect 0.30.x to be maintained for a long time.
  13. Neither will any new features be added in 0.30.x.
  14. Nor will any minor/cosmetic bugs be fixed in 0.30.x.
  15. - There will be no binary releases for 0.30.x - just use the 1.x.x releases
  16. if you want a binary.
  17. - The 1.x.x binaries include python 3.5, so using them might be an option for
  18. older systems that do not have python >= 3.4.
  19. - Alternatively, you can always install python 3.4 or 3.5 to /usr/local/bin
  20. (make altinstall) without causing issues/conflicts with your system python.
  21. Bug fixes:
  22. - silently skips disk I/O errors, includes truncated files into archive, #748
  23. - seeking to an invalid position is an IOError in python 3.2, #621
  24. - Cache: fix exception handling in __init__, release lock, #610
  25. Other changes:
  26. - allow llfuse version 0.41.x, #642
  27. - document and automate llfuse requirement (setup.py / requirements.d/fuse.txt)
  28. - require msgpack==0.4.6 - no python 3.2 support in 0.4.7+
  29. Missing in 0.30.0 change log:
  30. - Vagrantfile: avoid pkg-config missing error msg on netbsd
  31. - add chunks.archive.d trick to FAQ
  32. - Vagrantfile: remove python 3.2, use older pip/venv for trusty
  33. pyenv installs latest virtualenv/pip that is not compatible with py 3.2 any more
  34. Version 0.30.0
  35. --------------
  36. Compatibility notes:
  37. - you may need to use -v (or --info) more often to actually see output emitted
  38. at INFO log level (because it is suppressed at the default WARNING log level).
  39. See the "general" section in the usage docs.
  40. - for borg create, you need --list (additionally to -v) to see the long file
  41. list (was needed so you can have e.g. --stats alone without the long list)
  42. - see below about BORG_DELETE_I_KNOW_WHAT_I_AM_DOING (was:
  43. BORG_CHECK_I_KNOW_WHAT_I_AM_DOING)
  44. Bug fixes:
  45. - fix crash when using borg create --dry-run --keep-tag-files, #570

  57. New features:
  58. - borg create: implement exclusions using regular expression patterns.
  59. - borg create: implement inclusions using patterns.
  60. - borg extract: support patterns, #361
  61. - support different styles for patterns:
  62. - fnmatch (`fm:` prefix, default when omitted), like borg <= 0.29.
  63. - shell (`sh:` prefix) with `*` not matching directory separators and
  64. `**/` matching 0..n directories
  65. - path prefix (`pp:` prefix, for unifying borg create pp1 pp2 into the
  66. patterns system), semantics like in borg <= 0.29
  67. - regular expression (`re:`), new!
  68. - --progress option for borg upgrade (#291) and borg delete <archive>
  69. - update progress indication more often (e.g. for borg create within big
  70. files or for borg check repo), #500
  71. - finer chunker granularity for items metadata stream, #547, #487
  72. - borg create --list now used (additionally to -v) to enable the verbose
  73. file list output
  74. - display borg version below tracebacks, #532
  75. Other changes:
  76. - hashtable size (and thus: RAM and disk consumption) follows a growth policy:
  77. grows fast while small, grows slower when getting bigger, #527
  78. - Vagrantfile: use pyinstaller 3.1 to build binaries, freebsd sqlite3 fix,
  79. fixes #569
  80. - no separate binaries for centos6 any more because the generic linux binaries
  81. also work on centos6 (or in general: on systems with a slightly older glibc
  82. than debian7
  83. - dev environment: require virtualenv<14.0 so we get a py32 compatible pip
  84. - docs:
  85. - add space-saving chunks.archive.d trick to FAQ
  86. - important: clarify -v and log levels in usage -> general, please read!
  87. - sphinx configuration: create a simple man page from usage docs

  100. Version 0.29.0
  101. --------------
  102. Compatibility notes:
  103. - when upgrading to 0.29.0 you need to upgrade client as well as server
  104. installations due to the locking and commandline interface changes otherwise
  105. you'll get an error msg about a RPC protocol mismatch or a wrong commandline
  106. option.
  107. if you run a server that needs to support both old and new clients, it is
  108. suggested that you have a "borg-0.28.2" and a "borg-0.29.0" command.
  109. clients then can choose via e.g. "borg --remote-path=borg-0.29.0 ...".
  110. - the default waiting time for a lock changed from infinity to 1 second for a
  111. better interactive user experience. if the repo you want to access is
  112. currently locked, borg will now terminate after 1s with an error message.

  127. - include system info below traceback, #324
  128. - sane remote logging, remote stderr, #461:
  129. - remote log output: intercept it and log it via local logging system,
  130. with "Remote: " prefixed to message. log remote tracebacks.
  131. - remote stderr: output it to local stderr with "Remote: " prefixed.
  132. - add --debug and --info (same as --verbose) to set the log level of the
  133. builtin logging configuration (which otherwise defaults to warning), #426
  134. note: there are few messages emitted at DEBUG level currently.
  135. - optionally configure logging via env var BORG_LOGGING_CONF
  136. - add --filter option for status characters: e.g. to show only the added
  137. or modified files (and also errors), use "borg create -v --filter=AME ...".

  359. Version 0.25.0
  360. --------------
  361. Compatibility notes:
  362. - lz4 compression library (liblz4) is a new requirement (#156)
  363. - the new compression code is very compatible: as long as you stay with zlib
  364. compression, older borg releases will still be able to read data from a
  365. repo/archive made with the new code (note: this is not the case for the
  366. default "none" compression, use "zlib,0" if you want a "no compression" mode
  367. that can be read by older borg). Also the new code is able to read repos and
  368. archives made with older borg versions (for all zlib levels 0..9).
  369. Deprecations:
  370. - --compression N (with N being a number, as in 0.24) is deprecated.
  371. We keep the --compression 0..9 for now to not break scripts, but it is
  372. deprecated and will be removed later, so better fix your scripts now:
  373. --compression 0 (as in 0.24) is the same as --compression zlib,0 (now).
  374. BUT: if you do not want compression, you rather want --compression none
  375. (which is the default).
  376. --compression 1 (in 0.24) is the same as --compression zlib,1 (now)
  377. --compression 9 (in 0.24) is the same as --compression zlib,9 (now)
  378. New features:
  379. - create --compression none (default, means: do not compress, just pass through
  380. data "as is". this is more efficient than zlib level 0 as used in borg 0.24)
  381. - create --compression lz4 (super-fast, but not very high compression)
  382. - create --compression zlib,N (slower, higher compression, default for N is 6)
  383. - create --compression lzma,N (slowest, highest compression, default N is 6)
  384. - honor the nodump flag (UF_NODUMP) and do not backup such items
  385. - list --short just outputs a simple list of the files/directories in an archive
  386. Bug fixes:
  387. - fixed --chunker-params parameter order confusion / malfunction, fixes #154
  388. - close fds of segments we delete (during compaction)
  389. - close files which fell out the lrucache
  390. - fadvise DONTNEED now is only called for the byte range actually read, not for
  391. the whole file, fixes #158.
  392. - fix issue with negative "all archives" size, fixes #165
  393. - restore_xattrs: ignore if setxattr fails with EACCES, fixes #162
  394. Other changes:
  395. - remove fakeroot requirement for tests, tests run faster without fakeroot
  396. (test setup does not fail any more without fakeroot, so you can run with or
  397. without fakeroot), fixes #151 and #91.
  398. - more tests for archiver
  399. - recover_segment(): don't assume we have an fd for segment
  400. - lrucache refactoring / cleanup, add dispose function, py.test tests
  401. - generalize hashindex code for any key length (less hardcoding)
  402. - lock roster: catch file not found in remove() method and ignore it
  403. - travis CI: use requirements file
  404. - improved docs:
  405. - replace hack for llfuse with proper solution (install libfuse-dev)
  406. - update docs about compression
  407. - update development docs about fakeroot
  408. - internals: add some words about lock files / locking system
  409. - support: mention BountySource and for what it can be used
  410. - theme: use a lighter green
  411. - add pypi, wheel, dist package based install docs
  412. - split install docs into system-specific preparations and generic instructions
  413. Version 0.24.0
  414. --------------
  415. Incompatible changes (compared to 0.23):
  416. - borg now always issues --umask NNN option when invoking another borg via ssh
  417. on the repository server. By that, it's making sure it uses the same umask
  418. for remote repos as for local ones. Because of this, you must upgrade both
  419. server and client(s) to 0.24.
  420. - the default umask is 077 now (if you do not specify via --umask) which might
  421. be a different one as you used previously. The default umask avoids that
  422. you accidentally give access permissions for group and/or others to files
  423. created by borg (e.g. the repository).
  424. Deprecations:
  425. - "--encryption passphrase" mode is deprecated, see #85 and #97.
  426. See the new "--encryption repokey" mode for a replacement.
  427. New features:
  428. - borg create --chunker-params ... to configure the chunker, fixes #16
  429. (attic #302, attic #300, and somehow also #41).
  430. This can be used to reduce memory usage caused by chunk management overhead,
  431. so borg does not create a huge chunks index/repo index and eats all your RAM
  432. if you back up lots of data in huge files (like VM disk images).
  433. See docs/misc/create_chunker-params.txt for more information.
  434. - borg info now reports chunk counts in the chunk index.
  435. - borg create --compression 0..9 to select zlib compression level, fixes #66
  436. (attic #295).
  437. - borg init --encryption repokey (to store the encryption key into the repo),
  438. fixes #85
  439. - improve at-end error logging, always log exceptions and set exit_code=1
  440. - LoggedIO: better error checks / exceptions / exception handling
  441. - implement --remote-path to allow non-default-path borg locations, #125
  442. - implement --umask M and use 077 as default umask for better security, #117
  443. - borg check: give a named single archive to it, fixes #139
  444. - cache sync: show progress indication
  445. - cache sync: reimplement the chunk index merging in C
  446. Bug fixes:
  447. - fix segfault that happened for unreadable files (chunker: n needs to be a
  448. signed size_t), #116
  449. - fix the repair mode, #144
  450. - repo delete: add destroy to allowed rpc methods, fixes issue #114
  451. - more compatible repository locking code (based on mkdir), maybe fixes #92
  452. (attic #317, attic #201).
  453. - better Exception msg if no Borg is installed on the remote repo server, #56
  454. - create a RepositoryCache implementation that can cope with >2GiB,
  455. fixes attic #326.
  456. - fix Traceback when running check --repair, attic #232
  457. - clarify help text, fixes #73.
  458. - add help string for --no-files-cache, fixes #140
  459. Other changes:
  460. - improved docs:
  461. - added docs/misc directory for misc. writeups that won't be included
  462. "as is" into the html docs.
  463. - document environment variables and return codes (attic #324, attic #52)
  464. - web site: add related projects, fix web site url, IRC #borgbackup
  465. - Fedora/Fedora-based install instructions added to docs

  477. - reorganize borgbackup.github.io sidebar, prev/next at top
  478. - deduplicate and refactor the docs / README.rst
  479. - use borg-tmp as prefix for temporary files / directories
  480. - short prune options without "keep-" are deprecated, do not suggest them
  481. - improved tox configuration
  482. - remove usage of unittest.mock, always use mock from pypi
  483. - use entrypoints instead of scripts, for better use of the wheel format and
  484. modern installs
  485. - add requirements.d/development.txt and modify tox.ini
  486. - use travis-ci for testing based on Linux and (new) OS X
  487. - use coverage.py, pytest-cov and codecov.io for test coverage support
  488. I forgot to list some stuff already implemented in 0.23.0, here they are:
  489. New features:
  490. - efficient archive list from manifest, meaning a big speedup for slow
  491. repo connections and "list <repo>", "delete <repo>", "prune" (attic #242,
  492. attic #167)
  493. - big speedup for chunks cache sync (esp. for slow repo connections), fixes #18
  494. - hashindex: improve error messages
  495. Other changes:
  496. - explicitly specify binary mode to open binary files
  497. - some easy micro optimizations
  498. Version 0.23.0
  499. --------------
  500. Incompatible changes (compared to attic, fork related):
  501. - changed sw name and cli command to "borg", updated docs
  502. - package name (and name in urls) uses "borgbackup" to have less collisions
  503. - changed repo / cache internal magic strings from ATTIC* to BORG*,
  504. changed cache location to .cache/borg/ - this means that it currently won't
  505. accept attic repos (see issue #21 about improving that)
