refactor return codes, fixes #61

0 = success (logged as INFO)
1 = warning (logged as WARNING)
2 = (fatal and abrupt) error (logged as ERROR)

please use the EXIT_(SUCCESS,WARNING,ERROR) constants from helpers module.
